In a context where injury prevention and performance optimization are key priorities for both elite athletes and demanding amateurs, Saarland University Hospital (UKS) in Germany set out to take a significant step forward. The Department of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery aimed to offer a comprehensive solution that combined 3D motion analysis technology with specialized clinical assessment, all within a leading hospital environment.

With this goal in mind, the OrthoKineCheck biomechanics laboratory was inaugurated in April 2025— a facility equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the analysis of musculoskeletal movement. The project was born out of the ambition to set a new standard in biomechanical evaluation for both health and sports applications.

To bring this ambitious project to life, UKS chose STT Systems’ 3DMA system — a real-time 3D motion analysis solution specifically designed for clinical and sports environments. This cutting-edge technology captures body kinematics with millimeter precision, identifies dysfunctional movement patterns, and helps customize treatments or postural corrections.

UKS was looking for a reliable, easy-to-use tool that could deliver discipline-specific metrics quickly and automatically generate high-quality, professional reports. The 3DMA system met all these requirements, making it the ideal choice for their laboratory.

One of the lab’s most innovative and in-demand services today is clinical bike fitting. This service is tailored to cyclists across all disciplines — road, mountain, triathlon, gravel, and even e-sports — and also includes golf swing analysis. Each session combines a 3D biomechanical analysis of the athlete’s position on the bike using the 3DMA system with a personalized orthopedic evaluation by the department’s clinical director, Prof. Dr. Stefan Landgraeber.

This combination allows for extremely precise bike adjustments and optimal adaptation of the equipment to the athlete, resulting in tangible benefits such as:

  • 3D biomechanical analysis of the cyclist’s position on their own bike.
  • Personalized orthopedic assessment by the department’s clinical director, Prof. Dr. med. Stefan Landgraeber.

This combination enables highly accurate bike adjustments, leading to tangible benefits such as:

The entire process is completed in a single session lasting between one and three hours, supervised by sports scientists and clinical experts, with the option of reimbursement through German health insurance.

In golf, the analysis also helps improve golf swing technique, prevent injuries, study progression, and much more.

Looking ahead: more sports, greater impact

The success of the 3DMA system in the cycling field has motivated the UKS team to expand its scope. In 2025, new analysis protocols will be introduced:

  • Gait and posture
  • Running
  • Golf swing

In parallel, dedicated studies are being developed for ball sports such as handball and basketball, where motion control is crucial for both injury prevention and performance optimization.
